The Burnaby Festival of Learning (BFOL) takes place over a week each May and features lifelong learning and community-building workshops, dialogues, demonstrations and more. The festival offers opportunities to create and present enlivening, creative and social events that ultimately catalyze new, long-term relationships and partnerships, which add depth to the social and cultural fabric of Burnaby. The festival is free, and the program aims for inclusivity and diversity.

Simon Fraser University and the City of Burnaby work together to produce the BFOL. Each year more community members from Burnaby get involved, and new partnerships and collaborations emerge that diversify the program further.

The Burnaby Festival of Learning started during Simon Fraser University’s 50th anniversary and has been on-going since.
In this live online event, learn about how the Burnaby Festival of Learning was conceived, how the partnership between Simon Fraser University and the City of Burnaby has continued to develop before engaging with the presenters in conversations about possibilities you might like to create within your own learning communities and cities and exploring partnering in lifelong learning opportunities as a way to create sustainable cities.

Simon Fraser University (SFU) is located on the unceded lands of the Coast Salish peoples on the Canadian West Coast in Burnaby, British-Columbia. Since its inception in 1965, SFU has become a leader as first-ranked comprehensive university in Canada. As Canada’s most engaged university, our distinctive west coast spirit challenges conventions, celebrates new ideas and embraces diversity illustrated in numerous partnerships with local communities, national and international partners.

The City of Burnaby is located on the ancestral and unceded homelands of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples. Located in British Columbia, Canada, Burnaby is situated in the centre of Metro Vancouver, and is the third-largest city in the province with more than 249,000 residents. Burnaby is known for its beautiful surrounding natural environments and diverse culture—making it a sought-after place to live, work and play. Burnaby has one of the highest open-space-to-resident ratios in North America, with 25% of the land designated to parks and open spaces. Roughly 54% of Burnaby residents have a primary language that is neither English nor French—Canada’s two official languages.
